HELLO! You’ve found our Insider’s Guide to East Falls (in progress). Lovingly compiled by neighbors, for neighbors, this directory’s full of practical services and creative ideas for getting the most out of this very special place to live.

East Falls has an interesting history going back to colonial times, when we were a fishing resort called “Fort St. David’s.” The industrial revolution hit us hard, with shops, mills & breweries dotting Ridge, Scotts & Conrad — and filling our corner of the Wissahickon with hotels, dance halls & shooting parks.

We’re crazy for catfish here, plus we have eccentric legends of Pharmacy barons, the Kelly family, and a Frank Sinatra wedding ruse. We’ve even got a bona fide PRINCE moving into the neighborhood!

Today, we’re in a time of growth & transition as our population swells with young transplants from Center City, Fairmount and the suburbs, who appreciate our strategic location convenient to the city and out to the turnpikes & I95.

Plus, hello — the Wissahickon! And our ever-changing river, that adds so much personality to our developing “downtown.”

Welcome to East Falls! Please enjoy the simplicity of this directory’s bare-bones format. For photos, social media, reviews, feedback, directions, follow the links provided. Email corrections/submissions/feedback to scoop@EastFallsInsider.com. Thanks! — September 2017

ED NOTE:  We’re aiming for “curated” not “exhaustive” in our listings. While most suggestions are local, we stray a little outside what’s technically East Falls, in an effort to include all of the nearby services we frequent ourselves. Nothing listed is more than a short drive away (except for jaunts to surrounding counties, where we estimate travel times).

“Dog Beach” off Forbidden Drive
A wide rocky stretch along Wissahickon creek with calm, shallow flats where many neighborhood dogs learn to swim & play with other dogs. While not fenced, obviously, this area is rather nicely enclosed by the forest so off-lead dogs aren’t so tempted to stray. (Technically dogs must be leashed in the Wissahickon, but many owners bend the rules here — if you have a reactive dog you might need to go off-hours to avoid off-lead dogs. Contact us for alternate times & beaches.)

Chubby’s Steaks
Most people discover Chubby’s when they skip over cause the line at Dalessandro’s is too long, and then wind up staying. Chubby’s vs Dalessandro’s is our area’s version of Pats vs Gino’s — you’re gonna have to figure it out for yourself.  Curly fries here earn raves from friends, btw.

Pizzeria Nonna
Pizza fans are over the moon about this place, opened May 2016. Traditional NYC-style, and also a thicker-crusted square pizza that’s kind of like Sicilian but thinner, with a highly-textured crust. Stromboli & calzones, too. From the owners of Falls Taproom, just a 6 – 8 minute drive to Germantown Avenue.
5301 Germantown Ave (near Germantown Friends)

PIZZA NINJA REVIEW, March 2017

Custard & Cakes Creamery
Old-school, home-made ice cream stand with an impressive menu offering lots of hand-dipped “hard” varieties, plus frozen custard & yogurt, shakes, malts, blended “Glaciers” (a riff on the DQ Blizzard), sundaes of all kinds, and even water ice. Ice-cream cakes are generally special-order items, although they usually keep chocolate/vanilla and cookies & cream in stock. They also serve food items like hot dogs, soft pretzels, and something called “Meatballs in a Cup” that Two Girls should never, under any circumstances, order (ha).  Also: they have a drive-thru!  Best ice cream in Philly, possibly; long lines in warm weather but worth the wait

UPDATE, July 28, 2017: SadlyEpicure closed its doors as of July 23rd. Word on the street says there are three bidders for the space, two of which are restaurants. The smart money says it will become the new home of the 3rd bidder — ArtistHaus Salon, currently located across the street from Epicure. Restaurant fans, take heart! We hear that one of the two bidders for Epicure will open a new restaurant in the same building ArtistHaus will soon vacate. It’ll take up two retail spaces and serve breakfast as well as a fine dining menu for lunch and dinner, according to our sources.

DINERS — Travesty! We have no diners in East Falls! But these nearby options are a fine choice whenever you’re craving comfort food or Breakfast Anytime.

Bob’s Diner
I dunno, guys. This super-authentic, old-school “greasy spoon” has a wall of Best Of awards and it’s always crowded so…. Far be it from me to disagree with the masses but… Well… ehrm.

215-483-9002
Open Mon – Sat 7am – 9pm; Sun 8am – 9pm

Open Mon – Sat 8am – 3:30pm; Sun 8am – 4pm

A’s Place (the old Manayunk Diner)
This local fixture had been closed for awhile and now seems to be back with different owners, and they seemed to be occupying only about half the space when we last were there. Weird hours, but rave reviews on Yelp. Obviously a re-look is in order, but meanwhile it’s on our radar.

LOCAL FAMOUS ARTISTS

Paul Gorka and his wife Christine occupy a paint-splashed rowhome on Stanton Street that was once East Falls’ VFW Post. Although Paul is more famous, they’re both wildly talented — and yet totally down-to-earth. Occasionally, they offer classes open to all in the neighborhood (highly recommended)

Yet another artistic husband & wife team on Stanton, Steam Chamber creates steam-bent wood art installations, public & private, plus one-of-a-kind organic lighting. Their team fabricated the Knotted Grotto, a Parkway art installation in honor of (and visited by) Pope Francis during his visit to Philadelphia last year

Coulter-street painter Jay McClellan specializes in fine art commissions of the furriest members of your family. Jay’s playful, colorful pet portraits are featured all over Philly (including all White Dog Cafe locations)! This PAFA-schooled artist is surprisingly laid-back & affordable. Check out his latest projects on Facebook, or message him from his website.

Photographer (and PhillyU prof) Mark Havens lives on Midvale and is best known for his haunting, nostalgic images of old Wildwood Doo-Wop hotels. Featured in the NY Times, and appreciated by scores of local with fond memories of the shore.

Larry Benjamin, award-winning local LGTB author and community guy, to boot.

Booth’s Corners Amish Market & Flea Market
Fresh produce, meats, baked goods, etc. plus a flea market and food court. Like the Reading Terminal market, but more of a local mish-mosh — and much lower prices. Amish & Mennonites from surrounding farmlands (closer than you think!) have been selling their wares at this sprawling market since the 1930’s.  Fascinating & authentic and delightfully rough around the edges.  Shoe freaks:  the footwear outfit here occasionally offers deep discounts on surprisingly trendy designers.
